Steam for Chrome OS was initially released on the Chrome OS Dev channel as an early alpha build back in April. At the time of the launch, the alpha only supported a small group of Chromebooks and demanded Intel Iris Xe Graphics, 11th Gen Core i5 or i7 processors, and at least 8GB of RAM. Additionally, the platform only supported a list of around 50 games.

Despite being in the process of shutting its own game streaming service down, it seems Google is not yet fully done with the prospect of cloud gaming. The company has announced a lineup of new Chromebooks that will be optimized for playing in the cloud.

Google has unveiled not one, not two, but three new Chromebooks along with partners Lenovo, Acer, and ASUS. These notebooks have been dubbed the Acer Chromebook 516 GE, the ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip, and the Ideapad Gaming Chromebook from Lenovo. According to Google, these three computers will be known as the world’s first laptops built specifically for cloud gaming.

It’s hard to believe, but we are getting close to a new school season for both primary and college students. Many of them will be taking a new Chromebook to use in class, or at home. Today, Google announced a number of upcoming new apps and features that will be coming to Chromebooks and ChromeOS in the next few months. Perhaps the biggest new feature is the revamped Google Photos movie editor that will debut first on Chromebooks sometime this fall.

A mere two weeks after it announced a slew of new products at CES 2022, HP is back with a new lineup of Windows 11 and Chrome OS laptops. HP says this new Fortis product line is designed around durability — evident from the MIL-STD and IP41 ratings present across the board. Acer unveiled three new Chromebooks at CES 2022, refreshing its existing mid-range and premium portfolio with the latest chips from Intel and MediaTek. Notably, the most powerful model of the trio is powered by MediaTek’s Kompanio 1380 processor.

While we’ve seen several Chromebooks feature MediaTek processors so far, they’ve all traded performance for a lower price point — typically targeting the sub-$400 market. The updated Acer Chromebook Spin 513 looks to be an exception and is among the first to adopt MediaTek’s performance-oriented processors.

Gaming on Chrome OS, at least using Steam, isn’t as flawless as it should be. There’s no dedicated Steam client yet, but there are workarounds. However, this could all change very soon. According to new evidence, native Steam support could debut on Chromebooks in the coming weeks, giving consumers another potential reason to buy Chrome OS-powered laptops.

Per an Android Police report, two new flags are present in Chrome OS’s latest dev channel build relating to Borealis — the code-name of the Steam support project on the platform. The current developer version is likely next in line to graduate to Chrome OS’s beta channel, suggesting that Steam support could soon make its soft public debut.

9to5Google has spotted a new Chrome flag for a so-called “snooping protection” feature that’s coming to Chromebooks.

It’s been over two years since we saw the most recent Google-branded laptop, which is known as the Pixelbook Go. Two years before that, we saw the original Pixelbook. One would think we’d see some sort of Pixelbook launch this year, right?

Acer launched its latest wave of Chromebooks on Wednesday. The four new models cover a broad swathe of the market, catering to power users and budget buyers alike. Although pricing between the top and tail models see a ~$300 swing, the Chromebooks all focus on providing accessible conferencing facilities to those still working from home.

Google confirmed earlier this year that the Pixel 6 series would be powered by the company’s first in-house chipset. The custom Tensor processor hosts some machine learning smarts and is also tipped to offer a Samsung modem.

Now, Nikkei Asia reports that Google is building its own processors for Chrome OS-powered laptops and tablets, citing three sources familiar with the plans. It’s claimed that a launch is planned for 2023.

Last month, Samsung very quietly launched a cheaper variant of its incredible (but pricey) Galaxy Chromebook series. The machine is a looker and its $299 starting price tag is certainly exciting.

High-powered Chromebooks are still relatively rare, but ASUS appears bent on changing that. Chrome Unboxed reports that ASUS has quietly introduced the Chromebook Flip CX5400, a 14-inch convertible laptop that delivers performance that’s difficult to find in some thin-and-light Windows machines, let alone a Chrome OS device.

You probably don’t think of Chromebooks as gaming machines unless you’re a Stadia fan, but that might change before long. Chrome Unboxed has discovered Chromium OS source code hinting at a Chromebook with a dedicated GPU — the first known Google-powered laptop to pack that kind of graphics power.

The Chromebook, codenamed Mushu, would use an AMD Vega 12-based GPU — not the integrated Vega 11 you find in certain processors. Mushu would pair the graphics chip with a 10th Gen Intel Core processor, but it wouldn’t involve one of Intel’s briefly available hybrid CPUs with AMD video.

Ten years ago, at Google I/O 2011, Google announced the first commercial Chromebooks: the Samsung Series 5 and the Acer AC700.

To give you an idea of how long ago this was, the company also announced at that event a new version of Android, which would be known as Ice Cream Sandwich. It also launched a music streaming service called Google Music Beta, which eventually became Google Play Music (RIP).

Google is rolling out a Chrome OS update that could make life much easier when you have a quick question for your Chromebook.

A centerpiece feature in the update provides answers to simple questions directly from the Launcher on your Chromebook — you don’t have to open a browser tab or run an app. You can ask your question by tapping the Everything Button and typing in a query, whether it’s a calculation, the weather, or a word definition.

Believe it or not, Chromebooks are now 10 years old — and Google is marking the occasion with a major Chrome OS update that delivers several welcome features.

The update chiefly focuses on syncing Chrome OS with your other devices. A new Phone Hub (pictured below) offers control over key aspects of your Android phone, including text messages, the hotspot and recent Chrome tabs. An expanded Wi-Fi Sync brings automatic trusted connections to more devices, and an upcoming expansion of Nearby Share will quickly send files to and from Android and Chrome OS machines.

You might not need to buy a device like the Nest Hub Max to put a smart display in your home — at least, not if you have a Chromebook. Google has released a Chrome OS 88 update that turns your Chromebook lock screen into a smart display — with some limitations.

Enable a screen saver (under Personalization) and your Chromebook lock screen can show customized weather, music controls, and other information. Like typical smart displays, you can also set the background to display a personal photo album (from Google Photos). If you’d rather not show your own photos, you can pick from “hundreds” of art gallery images.

HP is launching a host of Chromebooks to serve teachers and students during the pandemic. A total of five devices arrive all running Google’s Chrome OS and a host of silicon from MediaTek to Intel.

Acer has another entry in its popular lineup of Chromebooks, this time from its Spin brand. The Acer Chromebook Spin 514 is the first such Chromebook from the company that will use both mobile processors and graphics chips from AMD.

Samsung has announced the Galaxy Chromebook 2, a fresh take on its ultra-slim Chromebook series. Where last year’s pricey Galaxy Chromebook impressed with a 4K screen, this year’s machine dials things back a bit to reach a lower price point.

Samsung says it is targeting a different class of user with the Galaxy Chromebook 2. The original Galaxy Chromebook unabashedly went for the top end of the Chromebook market. The sequel hopes to appeal to those who started with low-end Chromebooks and who now want more from their machine. It’s still a premium device. Samsung insists that the Galaxy Chromebook 2 packs premium sound, powerful performance, and more comfortable typing — all in an ultra-slim profile.

Google might soon give old PCs a new lease on life as Chromebooks. As 9to5Google reports, Google has quietly bought Neverware, a company whose CloudReady product brings Chrome OS (more specifically, Chromium OS) to older Macs and Windows PCs that might no longer receive system updates.

Neverware had no plans for changes to CloudReady in the near term, including the free Home Edition aimed at individuals. In the long run, however, the company said it would become an “official Chrome OS offering” with upgrades. You can expect the full weight of Google’s support for at least some versions, in other words.

Update: November 26, 2020 (12:30 AM ET): The Samsung Chromebook 4 and Chromebook 4 Plus have now arrived in the UK. The laptops will be available on Samsung’s website for now and the company says a wider roll out to selected retailers will begin next year.

The Samsung Chromebook 4 Plus is available in two storage variants at £349.99 (~$468) for the 32GB model and £379 (~$507) for the 64GB version.

News of a new Google-branded Chromebook first surfaced at the end of 2019. Benchmarks of that device code-named Zork emerged in April. That same device is seemingly back, now appearing on Google’s Play Console.

Spotted by 91Mobiles, the listing reveals key specs of the Chromebook. The Google Zork will seemingly sport all-AMD silicon governed by a dual-core quad-thread Ryzen 3 3250C topping out at 3.5GHz. It’ll be mated to 4GB of RAM and a Radeon Vega 3 GPU at 1.2GHz.

Acer introduced a slew of new additions to its product portfolio, chief of which is a new Chromebook and the Halo smart speaker.

The Acer Chromebook Spin 513 is the firm’s first machine sporting Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7c chipset. Announced late last year, the silicon employs an octa-core Kyro 468 CPU alongside the Adreno 618 GPU. Users have an option for LTE connectivity, too, while Acer adds 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage to the mix. Although this hardware cocktail isn’t intended for heavy computing, it does give the Chromebook up to 14 hours of use per charge, Acer claims.

Lenovo has long envisioned Chromebooks as more than glorified web surfers, offering Chrome OS with its Yoga and ThinkPad lines in the past. Now, the company is bringing these three elements together with its latest device. Dubbed the ThinkPad C13 Yoga Chromebook, Lenovo’s new productivity tool mixes the utility of the ThinkPad line with the 4-in-1 design smarts of the Yoga series.

The Chromebook features chunky lines and looks stronger than its 1.5kg (3.3 pound) weight would suggest. A number of other ThinkPad touches are included too. The red TrackPoint made a welcome appearance along with a well-spaced keyboard. There’s no dedicated number pad on this Chromebook, but users do get large shift, control, and alt keys on the left side. Dedicated left, middle, and right-click buttons also feature above the large trackpad.

Google just made life easier if you hate typing Wi-Fi passwords on your Chromebook. The internet giant is rolling out a Chrome OS update that will streamline a few common tasks, including signing in to your local wireless network.

A new Wi-Fi Sync feature will save passwords to your Google account, saving you from having to reenter a login for the same network on another Chromebook. This will be most helpful if you live in a home with multiple Chromebooks, but it could also be handy if you’re upgrading to a new laptop and don’t want to hunt down your credentials just to get online.

You no longer need a Mac or Windows PC if you want to use GeForce Now on your laptop. NVIDIA has launched a beta that brings the game streaming service to Chromebooks and other Chrome OS devices. In other words, a school laptop can handle top-tier PC games without turning to alternative cloud gaming services like Google Stadia.

Like on other devices, you can use both free and paid Founders accounts, and you can access the same 650-plus games (including upcoming releases like Cyberpunk 2077). NVIDIA recommends a USB mouse, at least for more intensive games.

Several models form the Acer Chromebook Spin family, and the company is looking to expand the series a bit with two new machines. The Chromebook 713 and Chromebook 311 tackle widely divergent use-cases and have equally divergent price points. Where the 713, with Project Athena cred, targets business users, the 311 is meant more for home or educational use.

Here’s the skinny on these two Chromebooks.

Lenovo today kicked off sales for the Chromebook Duet, a laptop-tablet hybrid that the company first revealed at CES 2020. The Chromebook Duet is available from Lenovo.com for $279 and $299 for the 64 and 128GB variants, respectively.

We spent just a couple of days with the device, so here are some of our initial impressions.

ASUS unveiled the Chromebook Flip C436 at CES 2020, which was one of the best Chromebooks at the event. We’ve been looking forward to trying the device out for ourselves, and it looks like the wait is finally over. ASUS just made the device available for purchase online.

The Flip C436 features a magnesium chassis similar to its predecessor, the ASUS Chromebook Flip C434. The new model weighs in at 2.58 pounds, which would be more than half a pound lighter than the 3.2-pound C434. Check it out:

Update: April 6, 2020: The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook is now on sale for $999. You can purchase it online at Best Buy’s site or at Samsung’s site at the links below. It’s available in the standard Mercury Grey color as well as in the cool looking Fiesta Red color.

Google today announced some pretty significant Chromebook-related news at the British Educational Training and Technology Show (BETT). During the show, Google revealed that many 2020 Chromebooks will see over eight years of software updates.

This is a notable extension of the previously confirmed six years of updates. In November last year, Google added an extra year onto select Chromebooks, but a full eight years is pretty exceptional.

Lenovo announced some 41 new products today at CES, including a range of Chromebooks, ThinkPads, and others. Chief among the fresh hardware are the Lenovo Chromebook IdeaPad Duet and the Lenovo Chromebook IdeaPad Flex 5, both of which can convert from one form factor to another. The company bolstered its business X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga lines, as well as added 5G to at least one model.

Of all the devices on hand, we found the convertibles the most interesting. Here’s the skinny.

In late 2019, Samsung launched a Windows laptop called the Samsung Galaxy Book Ion. The ultrathin, high-end laptop comes with an S Pen and a pretty navy blue colorway. Now, at CES 2020, the company announced a similar device: the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook.

As the name suggests, this laptop is a Chrome OS-based machine. It isn’t the first Chromebook from Samsung but does represent a few firsts for the brand: the Galaxy Chromebook is the thinnest Samsung Chrome OS laptop ever, the first with a built-in stylus, the first from Samsung with a 4K resolution, and the first to come in red.

Today, Apple officially took the wraps off its latest laptop, the 16-inch MacBook Pro. To commemorate the occasion, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing Philip Schiller conducted an interview with CNET to hype up the new $2,399 machine.

During that interview, the topic of Chromebooks came up, specifically the popularity of the devices in classrooms around the world. Schiller threw some serious shade at Chromebooks, even going so far as to say — and this is a direct quote — “they’re not going to succeed.”

CastAway

Recently, Microsoft announced the Duo — a dual-screen Android device it plans to launch next year. LG also recently released the G8X ThinQ — a dual-screen smartphone you can purchase right now. Now, a new Indiegogo campaign for a phone case called CastAway promises to add similar functionality to nearly any Android and iOS smartphone.

Ever since Chromebooks started coming out, the most common question has been, can they really replace your main computer? Many users have already done it, especially those who don’t need much more than something for checking emails, going through social media, and doing light browsing. But using a Chromebook full time in a professional setting, that’s another question.

I’ve tried before to fully replace my PC with iPads, Android tablets, and Chromebooks. It’s never worked, mostly because I need a decent way to edit photos and videos for work, but also because of the many kinks these type of products tend to bring to a larger screen. However I’ve felt that if one of these platforms was to get it right, it would be Chrome OS.

Chrome OS just got some handy updates. The latest version of the operating system brings tools for organizing your workspace, copying phone numbers, and printing documents quickly.

If you have a Chrome OS device — including a Chromebook, Chromebox, Chromebase, or Chromebit — you receive software updates on that device on a fairly regular basis. However, at a certain point in time, you won’t see Chromebook updates anymore. But when will that be?

Luckily, it’s very easy to find out when your specific Chrome OS device will stop getting its updates. It’s even better news that many older devices will continue to receive updates all the way through at least 2020, so it’s very likely your device will still be up-to-date for a long while.

After last year’s 2-in-1 Pixel Slate sank faster than the Titanic, Google has once again changed its mind on what the Pixelbook is. The new Pixelbook Go is easily the most “normal” of all the Pixelbook iterations we’ve seen so far. Yes, it’s a little safe and boring, but safe sells. After playing with it for a hot minute I could totally see myself buying and using one, something I couldn’t with the previous two. This is the Android Authority Google Pixelbook Go hands on.

While the Pixel 4 series will go down in history as one of the most-leaked smartphone series ever, we hope Google still has some surprises up its sleeve for its fall event.

Update, September 25 2019 (2:53AM ET): Google Assistant is available on the Pixelbook and Pixel Slate, but the search giant has confirmed that it’s now coming to Chromebooks by third-party brands.

Google confirmed the news on its blog, noting that the service is available on devices running the latest version of Chrome OS. Users simply need to navigate to Settings > Search and Assistant > Google Assistant to enable the service. Once you’ve done so, you can press the search key + a to summon the Assistant.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve heard some rumblings about the possibility of Google launching a new Chromebook along with the Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL in October.
