The Pixel Fold is here, and with it, Google has made its intentions known for the foldable space. The company isn’t shying away from an ultra-premium $1,799 price that immediately pushes the phone up there with the likes of the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Google is also leaving no stone unturned when it comes to packing the Pixel Fold with capable hardware and all of its AI and software trickery.

Moreover, Google insists the Pixel Fold will have the most usable outer display compared to other foldable phones in the market. The company wants you to think of it as having a regular, wide Pixel phone on the outside.

Samsung‘s Galaxy Z Flip series has been the most popular clamshell foldable phone for several years now, even though Motorola technically beat the Korean brand to the punch with its Razr line.

Nevertheless, we’re expecting both brands to offer new clamshell foldables in the global market in 2023. Samsung is set to announce the Galaxy Z Flip 5 later this year, while the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra recently leaked.

It’s almost impossible to buy a high-end smartphone in 2023 without a high refresh rate screen. However, Apple remains the sole holdout in this regard with its standard iPhone models, and it looks like this trend could continue until 2025.

Things get a little murkier when you look at mid-range segments and below, but you can still find a variety of cheap Android phones with high refresh rates.

Companies have shrunk the bezels (or borders) around their smartphone displays over the years. Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to find only a sliver of a bezel at the top and bottom.

In saying so, some brands might take an uneven approach to bezel sizes, with one border noticeably bigger than the other. For example, the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G (seen above) features a big chin and a smaller forehead.

Many high-end phones today have a moon mode, allowing you to take clear, zoomed-in snaps of the moon. However, Samsung is in the spotlight after a Reddit user’s experiment showed that the company’s moon mode could be easily duped.

The Redditor’s experiment showed that Samsung’s moon mode will recognize blurry pictures of the moon and add extra details, craters, and textures out of thin air. It’s also worth noting that Samsung wasn’t the only smartphone brand coming under the microscope for this. Huawei was previously under scrutiny for its moon mode too.

Today, Samsung officially unveiled the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, and we even spent some hands-on time with the Galaxy S23. As expected, most of the leaks we reported over the past months were true. The phones carry many spec and design elements from previous years while adding in some new flourishes. Galaxy S23 pricing also remains the same, at least in the United States.

Design-wise, the biggest changes are on the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus. These two phones now have individual camera cutouts on the back, which makes them look more similar to the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Likewise, the color options are the same across all three phones, which is something we (surprisingly) haven’t seen too often from Samsung. Inside, the phones have the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, which has been fine-tuned specifically for these phones.

Today’s smartphones are pretty big devices, so we wouldn’t be surprised if your pockets are too small for your current handset. In saying so, my phones still tend to fit just fine in my huge pants pockets.

That leads us to our featured poll today. How do you actually store your phone inside your pocket? Let us know by choosing an answer below, and leave a comment if you’ve got more to share on the matter.

Me? I prefer to store the phone upside-down (charging port pointing upwards) with the screen facing outwards. This way, I can quickly access the phone screen without performing any hand gymnastics. Plus, an outward-facing display means the screen won’t be stuck to my leg on a hot day (gross).

Then again, we’re sure there are at least a couple of people out there who store their phones right-side-up (charging port pointing down) and with the screen facing their leg.

Today’s Android smartphones have much bigger batteries than devices from five or six years ago, with 5,000mAh batteries being commonplace in the low-end and flagship segments alike.

Bigger batteries don’t necessarily mean that power banks and portable chargers aren’t important anymore. So we’re curious as to how many people actually have one. That’s the topic of our featured poll today, so let us know below.

We can see why you’d own a power bank, as they’re still very handy for traveling or if you live in a country with frequent power cuts. They’re also good to have if you’re going out but didn’t have enough time to adequately charge your phone (hello, Pixel and iPhone users).

Then again, today’s phones all have battery saving modes of some kind to help eke out more juice. So this can reduce the need for having a power bank in some cases.

Almost all of us have extensive digital photo libraries, be it via a cloud storage service like Google Photos or on your smartphone’s local storage. But are these photos something you forget about or do you make an effort to display them around the house?

That’s the topic of our featured poll today, so go ahead and vote below or leave a comment if you have more to share. Just to be clear, we’re talking about digital photos that you’ve either printed for display or photos shown on smart displays or digital frames.

In fact, Google Photos users in some markets can order prints from the service. These prints can either take the form of loose copies, canvas prints, premium prints, or they can be compiled into a photo album. So you’ve definitely got options if you prefer physical photos to a digital display.

The festive season is a great time to capture photos and videos of loved ones, cute pets, great food, and much more. So we inevitably see a smartphone or two come out at some point to take snaps and record videos.

This occurrence has us wondering whether you’re the designated photographer at social gatherings. Go ahead and vote in the poll below to give us your answer.

We can see why some Android Authority readers would be designated photographers, as our readers tend to be a tech-savvy bunch. They might have the latest and greatest smartphones or simply know enough to take the best snaps.

Me? I’m the designated photographer at most social gatherings, but that’s not really due to skill on my part. Instead, I usually tend to have the best camera phone and combine that with sheer quantity of shots. I guess I really should brush up on our smartphone camera tips guide.

The camera experience is one of the biggest considerations when buying a smartphone, at least according to the results of an Android Authority poll back in 2021. In fact, roughly three-quarters of respondents said it was one of several key considerations at the very least.

But what specific improvements do you actually want to see from smartphone cameras in 2023, though? That’s the topic of our featured poll today. So go ahead and make your decision via the poll below.

There’s still some room for improvement when it comes to daytime snaps, low-light capture, and selfie shots, whether that’s via noise reduction, improved HDR, reduced motion blur, or increased levels of detail. We can also understand why you’d want better video, as iPhones still have a reputation for offering superior video quality to Android devices.

Me? I’d love to see improved zoom in 2023, as several brands like OnePlus, OPPO, and Apple have neglected long-range zoom despite the likes of Google and Samsung streaking ahead. Nevertheless, you can give us your answer via the poll above.

Now that we’re winding things down, we thought it would be a good idea to ask you about the smartphone brand that surprised you the most in 2022. Go ahead and make a selection below, and leave a comment if you’d like to explain your choice.

We’re specifically talking about smartphone brands that surprised you in a good way, rather than companies that surprised you for all the wrong reasons. So don’t go choosing HTCfor its embarrassing “metaverse phone” shenanigans.

Google Photos is a pretty convenient photo backup service, also bringing some smart editing features to the table if you’ve got a Google One subscription or Pixel phone.

Another cool Google Photos feature you might not know about is that you can actually get your photos printed via the service. Is this something you’ve done before? Give us your answer via the poll below.

We can see why you’d choose to print via Google Photos, as it’s pretty seamless. You simply choose the option you want and then either have it delivered or pick it up from CVS, Walmart, or Walgreens. And there are a few options on offer, such as loose photos, photo albums, canvas prints, and premium prints.

Then again, this feature is limited to a few markets only. All of these photo printing options bar photo albums are only available in the US. Meanwhile, photo albums are also available in Canada and Europe. You might also balk at the price compared to alternative services.

Fingerprint scanners and face unlock are the two main biometric unlocking methods available on smartphones today, allowing us to seamlessly unlock our handsets, pay for purchases, and more.

Do you have a preference for one solution over the other, though? That’s what we want to find out in today’s featured poll. So give us your answer below and leave a comment if you’d like to elaborate.

We’re specifically referring to 3D face unlock when we talk about face unlock, as it’s the fastest, most secure, and most versatile facial recognition option. We’re not referring to a specific fingerprint scanner type here though (e.g. rear, side, in-display).

In saying so, you should choose “fingerprint scanners” if you prefer at least one type of fingerprint scanner over face unlock. So if you prefer rear fingerprint scanners over face unlock but prefer face unlock over in-display sensors, then choose “fingerprint scanners” anyway.

Apple is reportedly working on the ability to more easily sideload apps on iPhones, and this would be a major change for iOS if confirmed. But this feature isn’t new for Android, as sideloading has been available since the early days of the platform.

Nevertheless, we’re curious to know when was the last time you sideloaded an app on your Android smartphone. So go ahead and vote in our poll, and leave a comment at the bottom of the article!

When we talk about sideloading apps, we mean installing apps from sources other than the Google Play Store. Examples of third-party app sources and websites include APKMirror, F-Droid,  APK Pure, the Amazon AppStore, and Aptoide. These repositories can often contain a host of apps you won’t find on the Play Store.

In saying so, we’re going to go ahead and say that manufacturer app stores don’t count for this poll. After all, the HUAWEI AppGallery is the default store for modern HUAWEI phones and the Galaxy Store is required to download some Samsung apps anyway.

All of you should have a PIN code or some other form of authentication on your smartphone, preventing unauthorized people from accessing your device and serving as a security measure for theft.

But are you the only one who knows your phone’s PIN code or does your loved one know it as well? That’s what we want to know in today’s featured poll, so check it out below.

We can understand why you and your partner would share PIN codes. This could be handy in case one of you needs access to the other’s phone in a jiffy (e.g. for deliveries, accessing contacts, when one person is driving and can’t use their phone, etc). It’s also not unheard of for couples to share their phones’ PIN code access as part of an open phone policy in general, although that’s a topic for another time.

Then again, I can see why you wouldn’t share your phone’s PIN code with a loved one or vice-versa. Your phone is one of the most personal things you own, after all.

Smartphone charging speeds have tumbled in the last few years, and you can now find phones that offer a full charge in well under 30 minutes. But there are still quite a few new devices that take ages to top up.

How long does it take for your phone to fully charge, though? That’s what we want to know in today’s featured poll, so go ahead and make your choice below! You can also leave a comment if you’d like to expand on the subject.

Xiaomi and BBK brands (OnePlus, OPPO, realme) tend to offer the fastest charging times. For example, the OnePlus 10T‘s 150W charging solution takes the phone to a full charge in roughly 20 minutes. Even 65W charging on the realme GT 2 Pro takes the phone to a full charge in around 35 minutes. You can also find brisk speeds on sub-$400 handsets, such as the POCO X4 Pro and OnePlus Nord CE 2.

There are still a few lagging brands though, such as Apple and Google. For example, the Pixel 7 Pro takes over 90 minutes to get a full charge. But you can definitely find ultra-fast charging handsets in your market if you look hard enough.

There are quite a few ways to share files between your PC and phone these days, giving you more options than the old reliable wired connection.

How do you share files between your PC and phone, though? Do you still stick to wired transfers? Do you prefer cloud-based transfers? Whatever the case may be, you can let us know via the poll below and leave a comment if you’d like to elaborate.

Wired connections are the most reliable method, and they’re often the fastest too. But it isn’t 100% seamless given the need to plug things in. Meanwhile, email-based sharing is pretty painless for documents and a few photos but can be extremely slow for large files.

There are other wireless-based sharing methods though, such as Nearby Share, Microsoft’s Link to Windows feature, Pushbullet, FTP functionality, and more. But some of these methods require either a Chromebook (Nearby Share) or a specific phone brand (Link to Windows).

Android and iOS are effectively the only two major smartphone platforms on the market today, accounting for 99.4% of the global market according to StatCounter.

Does the world need a third smartphone platform though? That’s the topic of our featured poll today, so make your choice below and leave a comment if you’d like to elaborate.

We can understand why you’d feel two major platforms are enough. Android and iOS represent different approaches to the smartphone OS, giving users two stark choices to cover their needs and wants. You could also argue that dead/abandoned platforms like BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone serve as proof that we don’t need a third platform. Plus, we still have extremely niche alternative platforms today like Sailfish, Ubuntu Touch, and PureOS.

Then again, we can see why you might want a third major smartphone platform. The current landscape is effectively a duopoly right now for both consumers and app developers, so some proper competition from a big company could therefore be a good thing. You could also argue that the industry experienced peaks in terms of innovation when BlackBerry 10, WebOS, and Windows Phone were around at various points. Features like gesture navigation, card-based multitasking, desktop modes, and wireless charging debuted on these platforms first.

Cyber Monday is here, but we’re sure loads of you have already placed orders online. After all, there are plenty of products on special right now, ranging from smartphones and PCs to audio goods and more.

We’re curious about what happens after placing your order though. What are your habits when it comes to tracking your delivery? Do you obsessively check the tracker or do you perhaps even forget about your order? Let us know via today’s featured poll below.

We can understand if you’re constantly checking the tracker and signing up for all the alerts. This is especially important if you’re not necessarily going to be at home all day or if the delivery is of a time-sensitive nature (e.g. for a birthday in the coming days). Or if you’re simply the impatient type.

Today’s smartphones come with some smart imaging tech, allowing you to shoot night mode snaps and even some long exposures without the use of a tripod.

There are still times when you might need a mobile tripod for your smartphone, though. So with that being said, we wanted to know whether you indeed owned a tripod for your phone. You can give us your answer by voting in the poll below.

There are a few reasons to mount your phone to a tripod. For one, astrophotography modes and astro timelapses require this option. You might also want to use a tripod to reduce blur when shooting at night, or when using dedicated long-exposure/light painting modes. A tripod is also handy for group shots or to simply keep your phone as still as possible for recording video clips.

Then again, most phones deliver high-quality night shots just fine when in handheld mode. We’ve also seen devices like the Pixel series offering long-exposure/motion mode effects without the need of a tripod. So a mobile tripod doesn’t seem like a necessity for most situations.

Dual SIM functionality is one of the more underrated features on smartphones today, serving a variety of purposes. Of course, one of the biggest reasons to get a phone with dual SIM support is that you can have your work and personal numbers active on one device (no need for two phones).

Does your phone support dual SIMs in the first place, though? Go ahead and vote via the poll below, and leave a comment if you’d like to expand on your choice.

Just to clarify, we’re not just talking about phones with two physical SIM slots. We’re also talking about devices with a physical SIM slot and eSIM, or two eSIMs. Either way, you can choose the relevant option above.

Aside from having work and personal numbers on one handset, there are a couple of other reasons to get a phone with dual SIM support. For one, dual SIM functionality is ideal if you need to travel, letting you have local service while still keeping your primary number accessible. The feature is also popular in regions where mobile data is expensive, letting you keep your primary number active while taking advantage of attractive data deals on another network.

Authentication tech is integral for smartphones, as you’re exposing your personal and financial data if you don’t keep your device locked down. And there’s no shortage of authentication options, such as PIN codes, fingerprint unlock, facial recognition, and more.

Do you lock your smartwatch, though? That’s the topic of our featured poll today. So let us know by taking the survey below and leaving a comment if you’d like to elaborate on your decision.

We can understand why you’d want to lock your smartwatch, as you’d need to set this up if you plan to use mobile payments for one. It also gives you some peace of mind just in case your wearable gets lost or stolen.

Then again, I can see why you’d leave your watch unlocked. This ensures a seamless experience on your wrist when engaged in physical activity — no need to enter that code every few minutes during your run.

The Nintendo Switch has been around for almost six years now, launching way back in March 2017. The console still seems to be chugging along at a good pace, with a deep library of quality games on offer.

Nintendo is undoubtedly working on a follow-up console, but we want to know what you think of the Switch in 2022. Give us your answer via the poll below, and sound off in the comments if you’ve got more to share.

There are plenty of reasons to love the Switch still, as it’s pretty portable, has a ton of great games, and the handheld/TV functionality is still unique in the mainstream console gaming space today.

Then again, there are a few reasons why you might not like the Switch today. Battery life wasn’t great at launch, Joy-Con drift is still a thing, and Nintendo’s operating system remains limited compared to even Sony and Microsoft‘s consoles.

However, the company has recently announced a price hike for the service, going from $8 a month to $11 a month. Alternatively, you can pay $110 a year, which is a $30 increase over the previous price. Disney has also introduced an ad-supported plan, but this comes in at $8 a month or $80 a year.

So with all that in mind, we want to know whether you’ll be paying more for Disney Plus. Give us your answer via the poll below and leave a comment if you’d like to elaborate on your choice.

We can understand if you decide to ditch your membership. After all, the likes of Netflix have also recently hiked prices. So subscribing to multiple streaming memberships is becoming a more expensive endeavor. Then again, we get it if you’re willing to pay more for Disney Plus if you’re actually getting plenty of usage out of the service.

Poll: Will you pay for a blue check mark on Twitter? https://www.androidauthority.com/twitter-blue-poll-3230263/ https://www.androidauthority.com/twitter-blue-poll-3230263/#respond Wed, 02 Nov 2022 16:00:38 +0000 https://www.androidauthority.com/twitter-blue-poll-3230263/ Twitter stock photos 6

Earlier this week, Twitter’s new owner and interim CEO Elon Musk said he plans to charge Twitter users for verification. In other words, the blue check mark that appears next to verified profiles would now have a paywall. The fee would roll into the current Twitter Blue subscription program, which Twitter employees are currently revamping.

At first, Musk said this would be a $20-per-month fee. Twitter users showed incredible and immediate hostility towards this, so Elon lowered the hypothetical price to $8 each month. He later clarified that this fee would go up or down to match the buying power of your local currency, to make things fair.

The question now, though, is whether or not you’d actually pay this fee.

In our poll above, tick one of the boxes you feel applies to you. Remember that, as Musk describes it, this would no longer require you to prove you are a “notable person” to “earn” a blue check mark. Paying for Twitter Blue would earn you a blue check mark automatically, regardless of your status as a prolific tweeter, notable personality, journalist, etc.

We are excited to learn what you think about this news!

USB-C has been around for years at this point, with the first supported phones arriving way back in 2015. It took some companies a little longer to embrace the standard, but you really have to try hard to find new devices with micro-USB ports these days.

With that in mind, we wanted to know whether you still use any devices that have a micro-USB port. Go ahead and vote via the poll below and leave a comment if you’d like to elaborate on your choice.

We’re talking about pretty much any electronic gadget you use that happens to have a micro-USB connection, be it a smartphone, tablet, e-reader, smart home device, gamepad, or wearable.

Me? My current power bank and Xbox One controllers have micro-USB connectivity. I guess it’s about time to get a USB-C power bank, right?

Voice notes are supported by most of the major messaging apps, such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and even Google Messages. This makes for a quicker, more natural way to communicate compared to simply typing.

Is this something you actually use, though? That’s what we want to find out in our featured poll today, so let us know if you send voice notes via the survey below.

We can definitely see the appeal of sending voice notes. As we said above, it’s much quicker than typing a lengthy message. So you don’t need to spend minutes composing a multi-paragraph message when you can simply say it instead.

Then again, I find that listening to received voice notes can be a tedious experience, particularly if they’re more than a minute long. I’d much rather read a lengthy message than listen to the equivalent voice note. I imagine that other people might feel the same way and so I stick to sending text-based messages for the most part.

Benchmark apps are one of the most frequently cited measurements of performance for smartphones today. These apps put phones through a series of workloads, testing the CPU, GPU, and/or overall system.

However, we’re curious as to what our readers think of benchmark tests for smartphones. So go ahead and answer our poll below, and leave a comment if you’d like to elaborate.

We can understand if it’s your main measurement of a phone’s power, as real-world performance can sometimes be difficult to quantify. Then again, we could also see why people would say it’s one of several factors they take into consideration,

We can also see why people would say they don’t care about benchmarks. These tests generally consist of synthetic workloads that don’t always reflect your real-world experience. Furthermore, we’ve also manufacturers cheat in these benchmark tests over the years. A Googler also recently said that the team was “very comfortable” with Pixels not winning at benchmarks, focusing on AI-powered features instead.

One of the best things about Android phones is that you can customize them to a far greater extent than Apple’s iPhones. But you can also root your phone if you want even greater scope for customization, granting you lower level access to the phone’s system.

In saying so, we wonder how many people actually have rooted phones today. That’s the topic of our featured poll today, so let us know via the survey below.

Just to be clear, we’re asking whether your current daily driver is rooted rather than if you’ve got an old rooted phone in your drawer somewhere.

There are a few reasons to root your phone, with some apps (like backup and automation utilities) requiring it. Rooting is also necessary to make system-level changes like removing some forms of bloatware or tweaking the CPU clock speed.

Then again, there are a few drawbacks to rooting your phone. For one, many banking and payment apps don’t work on rooted devices without additional tweaking. Some forms of malware can also take advantage of root access to wreak havoc on your device.

Netflix launched an ad-supported streaming plan yesterday, coming after months of rumors and the company’s own confirmation earlier this year. The company joins platforms like Hulu and HBO Max in offering an ad-supported plan at a cheaper price.

Would you buy this plan, though? That’s what we want to know in our featured poll today, so let us know by choosing an answer below.

We can see why some people would be attracted to the Basic With Ads plan, as you’ve still got access to most of the Netflix library. The company also says you can expect four to five minutes of ads in an hour, which is far lower than many cable and broadcast TV channels. The $6.99 price tag will also undercut the upcoming Disney Plus ad-supported plan.

Then again, we don’t blame you if you want to steer clear of this plan. You’re limited to just 720p resolution, some content won’t actually be available at this tier, and you can’t download content to your mobile devices. We can also understand if it’s a matter of principle for you. After all, one of the original advantages of Netflix was that it had no ads.

Google Chrome has recently faced a backlash from enthusiasts and tech news outlets due to a major change coming next year. The company is switching to a new extension platform dubbed Manifest v3, but this will effectively break many ad-blocking extensions.

We’ve seen quite a negative reaction to this news on the likes of Reddit, but is this enough for you to switch from Chrome? That’s what we want to know in our featured poll today, so give us your answer below.

We totally understand if you plan to switch from Chrome or have already made the jump to an alternative browser. After all, ad-blocking extensions are almost essential for browsing some websites. Then again, you may have already jumped to an alternative web browser for unrelated reasons.

We can also see why some people might want to stay with Chrome through all of this. You might feel that it’s a hassle to transfer your browsing data to another web browser. Or maybe you’re just happy with the Chrome experience in the first place. It’s also worth noting that several other Chromium-powered web browsers such as Microsoft Edge and Vivaldi are embracing the controversial new extension platform too.

Google has offered the VPN by Google One service for a couple of years now, available as a free add-on for Google One customers on 2TB+ plans. Fortunately, the company is now extending this feature to Pixel 7 series owners.

Google confirmed that this VPN service will be free of charge for Pixel 7 series owners when it launches later this year. But do you trust Google to be your VPN provider? Let us know via the poll below.

We can see why you’d want to trust Google in this regard, as the service promises “minimal logging.” Google also said that it open-sourced the client and conducted a third-party audit in order to provide more transparency.

Then again, we can understand if you don’t trust Google with a VPN service. The company makes a ton of money off sniffing up personal data, for one. Then there’s the fact that Google says you can’t change your IP location to view content that isn’t available in your country.

Smartphone etiquette can be an extremely contentious issue when it comes to technology today, particularly in a social setting. People might have wildly different answers when it comes to using devices in various social situations.

However, we do wonder how many people actually put the phone down during social gatherings. So we put together a poll to find this out. You can take the poll below and leave a comment if you have more to share.

It makes sense to put your phone away during social gatherings, giving your undivided attention to the people around you. But we can also understand if you pull your phone out when no-one is talking to you.

Some people might also use their phone to simply avoid conversations in the first place. We’re guessing these people might suffer from social anxiety or that they might be neurodivergent in some way. Then again, some people who use their phones to avoid conversations simply might not like their present company or might be introverted.

We’ve been waiting years to see it, but now it’s finally here: the Google Pixel Watch is official. This is the first-ever wearable with a Google logo, and it appears to be a huge leap of faith for the brand. It launched alongside the Google Pixel 7 series.

As expected, the watch features Wear OS as a platform. This Android-based fork has a robust app library and plenty of power to run them all. Fitbit health tracking is on board which brings the already-stellar tracking basics of a Fitbit to the Pixel Watch. Of course, the battery isn’t that big, the processor is years old, and the price is a little high.

What do you think about the Google Pixel Watch? Has Google hit a home run or should this watch have stayed on the bench? Let us know by hitting the poll above. Once you do, head to the comments and leave us some notes about how you voted and why.

If you’re ready to take a chance on the Pixel Watch, you can pre-order it below. Remember that there are two versions: a Wi-Fi-only model and one that supports LTE connections.

Today, Google finally took the wraps off the Google Pixel 7 series. There weren’t too many surprises considering the number of leaks we saw leading up to the event, but now we know everything for certain.

Overall, the Pixel 7 series is an iterative upgrade over the Pixel 6 series. The designs are similar, the pricing is exactly the same, and the specs haven’t changed much. The new Tensor G2 chipset features a lot of the same architecture, too. However, the cameras saw some nice upgrades, there are a few new software tricks, and Google is also throwing in some nifty perks, such as a promise of free VPN access coming soon.

We want to know what you think, though. In the poll above, let us know if you think the Google Pixel 7 series is hot or not. Did Google offer enough changes to make the Pixel 7 series worthwhile? Or did Google play things too conservatively this year? Take your pick in the poll.

Google surprised almost no-one yesterday when it announced that it was discontinuing its Stadia game streaming service. The platform had only been around for just under three years but achieved little in the way of wide adoption.

So with this latest news in mind, we wanted to ask you whether you think shutting Stadia down is the correct move for Google. You can answer this question via the poll below and leave a comment if you have more on your mind.

We can understand why people would vote “yes,” as the platform didn’t enjoy widespread adoption and Google also took its time to bring the service to more markets. It’s also worth noting that Stadia required users to buy individual games for the most part, which went against the growing trend of all-you-can-eat services like Xbox Game Pass.

On the other hand, we wouldn’t be surprised if people voted “no.” Stadia is a rather radical technology, and the idea of playing games without splashing out on an expensive console or PC is really cutting-edge. Best of all, those with ideal conditions could enjoy top-notch visuals that normally required more expensive hardware. So we can understand why some people feel there was still scope to make business/strategy changes instead of pulling the plug outright.

Pixel 7 7 Pro Colors

Credit: Google

Google has already given us a good look at all the colors of the new Pixel 7 phones. You’ve got Obsidian, essentially black, and Snow, a fancy way of saying white, as the standard colors for both the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.

This year’s new additions include a Hazel colorway for the Pro model and a Lemongrass option for the Pixel 7. That’s it.

Some would say Google is taking a more conservative approach compared to its vibrant color options on the Pixel 6 series. Apart from the standard Stormy Black, the Pixel 6 comes in Kinda Coral and Sorta Seafoam. Meanwhile, the 6 Pro features Cloudy White and Sorta Sunny options. These versions offer a cool dual-colored rear cover design, something Google seems to have skipped on the new phones in favor of a uniform back color with a metallic camera island to break the monotony.

What do you think of Google’s color choices for the Pixel 7 series? Do you like them, or do you think they are a step down from the Pixel 6 series? Take our poll above and let us know which color you think looks best this year in the comments section below.

No smartphone is truly perfect, but this is particularly true of the Google Pixel series. Almost every flagship Pixel phone has had a significant weakness over the years.

So with the Pixel 7 series launch just a few days away, we thought it would be a good time to ask you what you thought Google will get wrong with the new flagship phones. Let us know your answer via the poll below.

Looking to the past, the Pixel 6 series suffered from a serious lack of software polish as well as woeful wireless connectivity. Meanwhile, the Pixel 5 switched to mid-range silicon that was adequate but raises questions about long-term performance and feature additions over time. Going back even further, the vanilla Pixel 4 also suffered from a tiny battery back in 2019.

Just to be clear, we’re not wishing that the Pixel 7 series suffers from major issues. But given the company’s track record, we’d be more surprised if the phones ship without significant problems.

A thin design used to be one of the most important factors for mobile phone manufacturers prior to the smartphone era. But even the modern smartphone era saw some brands obsess over reducing thickness, particularly in the late 2000s to early 2010s.

In saying so, it seems like today’s smartphone manufacturers aren’t too obsessed with thickness anymore. Is this something consumers care about, though? That’s the topic of our featured poll today, so let us know by casting a vote below.

We can understand why you might care about a phone’s thickness, though. It’s nice to have a slim and light handset that isn’t cumbersome to hold or awkward to carry in your pocket. Then again, a thin design can often result in other compromises such as reduced battery capacity, lower quality camera hardware, or other cutbacks. So we can see why you’d prioritize features like a large battery and better cameras over a thinner design.

Either way, you can vote via the poll above and leave a comment below if you’ve got more on your mind.

We’ve seen a few reports in the last few months about younger people using TikTok as their search engine of choice for some queries. More specifically, it seems like users are increasingly turning to the video platform for searches related to business queries (e.g. restaurants), tutorials, and more.

So with that in mind, we thought we’d ask you whether you used TikTok as a search engine. Let us know by taking the poll below, and leave a comment if you’d like to elaborate on your search habits.

We can understand why TikTok might be increasingly popular for searches like restaurants, for example. Food is a fixture on visual-driven social media platforms, so it’s a given that you’ll find great places to eat in your area with the relevant search. TikTok’s short-video format also seems like a great fit for tutorials.

In saying so, there are some types of search queries that simply don’t work well on the platform. These mostly relate to content not available on TikTok, as The Verge notes.

Searches on platforms other than dedicated search engines isn’t a new phenomenon, though. We’ve previously seen YouTube become a mega-popular search engine for its videos. A recent Android Authority poll also showed that most surveyed readers append “Reddit” to their search results, suggesting that Google’s engine isn’t dishing out the desired results.

You need a cellular provider to make the most out of a smartphone, allowing you to make calls, send texts, and use data when away from Wi-Fi hotspots. But these carriers aren’t equal, as some are simply better than others in certain areas.

That got us wondering what would make you switch to another carrier. This is the topic of our featured poll today, so vote below and leave a comment if you’d like to elaborate.

There are plenty of reasons why you’d want to switch to another cellular network. For one, you might be enticed by cheaper pricing from a rival carrier. Your current network might also have inferior coverage, forcing you to leap to another provider.

These reasons don’t stop here, either. Some of you might be inclined to switch if the new network has a wider variety of phones on offer. Some readers might also make the leap due to better customer service or better/more flexible plans. Either way, you can vote above.

Back in the day, when you bought a phone, you didn’t have to worry about already having a charger because one was always packed in the box with the phone. These days, however, it’s become increasingly common for smartphone manufacturers to exclude the power accessory. In fact, Oppo recently revealed that it would stop including chargers with several of its products starting next year.

Although the practice has become more frequent, it’s not the case for every phone. So for today’s topic, we want to know if your phone came with a charger or not. Whether it did or didn’t, let us know by voting in our survey.

Although it’s more likely than not that you already have a charger that you use for your new phone, it doesn’t make it any less frustrating that one wasn’t included. Especially when it seems you’re still paying the same price despite getting less in return.

But how does this trend make you feel? Don’t be afraid to leave a comment down below if you would like to tell us what you think about the growing number of phones that don’t come bundled with chargers.

Poll: Do you sleep with your phone in bed? https://www.androidauthority.com/sleep-with-phone-poll-3208088/ https://www.androidauthority.com/sleep-with-phone-poll-3208088/#respond Tue, 13 Sep 2022 13:13:09 +0000 https://www.androidauthority.com/sleep-with-phone-poll-3208088/ Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus screen upright on bed

There are loads of people who use their phone in bed before sleeping, doing things like reading, browsing social media, surfing the web, or using messaging apps.

However, how many people actually sleep with their phone in bed too? That’s the topic of today’s poll, so go ahead and vote via the survey below and leave a comment if you’d like to elaborate.

We can understand why you’d rather not have your phone in bed with you while sleeping. Perhaps the biggest issue is that you might accidentally knock it off your bed, potentially breaking the device and waking up the household. We also imagine that the mere presence of the phone in bed could be a distraction while trying to sleep.

Then again, it turns out that at least two Android Authority team members sleep with their phones under their pillows (including yours truly). So we’re guessing there are a few more people out there doing the same thing.

Tablets aren’t really daily drivers for most of us the same way that smartphones are. There may be people who rely on their tablets for creative and professional work, but those buyers might be far fewer than the ones who simply use their slates for media consumption and basic internet access on the go.

Still, Apple releases new iPads almost every year. Google is also getting back into the game with its first tablet in a while — the Pixel tablet. Plus, there are plenty of options in the Android tablet market.

Our question is, how often do you upgrade your tablets? Do you buy each and every new generation of the tablet you are using? Do you buy new tablets every year or as often as you buy new phones? Take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Poll: Are you happy with your phone’s camera zoom? https://www.androidauthority.com/phone-camera-zoom-poll-3207096/ https://www.androidauthority.com/phone-camera-zoom-poll-3207096/#respond Fri, 09 Sep 2022 10:08:17 +0000 https://www.androidauthority.com/phone-camera-zoom-poll-3207096/ Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus in blue angled camera closeup

Smartphones have made major strides over the years when it comes to camera zoom, as many phone brands offer dedicated telephoto or periscope cameras for higher-quality zoomed-in images. We’ve also seen improved image quality on phones without dedicated zoom cameras, using software techniques to deliver better pictures.

So with all that in mind, we want to know whether you’re happy with your phone camera zoom quality. You can let us know by simply voting in the poll below and leaving a comment if you’d like to elaborate.

Just to clarify, we’re asking you whether you’re happy with pictures taken when zoomed in. This is regardless of whether your phone has a dedicated telephoto/periscope camera. So if you have a Samsung Galaxy A53 (which lacks a telephoto camera) and think 2x or higher shots look good, go ahead and vote “yes.” If you’ve got a phone with a zoom-focused camera but still aren’t happy with zoomed-in images, then you can simply vote “no.”

Android has supported multiple users or profiles for years now, allowing several people to use a device with their own apps, wallpapers, and settings. In fact, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean was first to support multiple users back in 2012 (albeit for tablets at first).

Do you have multiple users set up on your Android phone, though? That’s the topic of our featured poll this time, so make your choice via the survey below and leave a comment if you have more on your mind.

Just to be clear, we’re talking about multiple users on your Android phone only. We’re not covering tablets or Android TV devices in this poll. We’re also not talking about multiple profiles within apps (such as several profiles within a streaming app) or several Google accounts that all belong to you.

Still, we can see how multiple profiles on a phone would be useful. This could be handy for employees who share a work phone or a parent wanting to temporarily hand off their phone to a child.

Poll: When was the last time you used mobile payments? https://www.androidauthority.com/last-time-mobile-payments-poll-3205189/ https://www.androidauthority.com/last-time-mobile-payments-poll-3205189/#respond Mon, 05 Sep 2022 12:46:19 +0000 https://www.androidauthority.com/last-time-mobile-payments-poll-3205189/ LG V60 LG Pay pull payment

Mobile payments are pretty convenient, allowing you to leave your bank card at home if need be. And virtually all smartphones are capable of supporting this tech in some capacity, provided they have a camera or NFC capabilities.

In saying so, we wanted to know when was the last time you used mobile payments on your smartphone. Give us your answer by voting in the poll below and leaving a comment if you have more on your mind.

We can see why you’d use mobile payments very often as it’s extremely convenient. Newer Samsung phones even included MST technology to emulate magnetic card swipes on older card machines that didn’t support NFC. Then again, mobile payment tech might be unfamiliar for some less tech-savvy people. So we can see why you might stick with a traditional bank card.

Me? I’ve used QR code payments on the odd occasion when visiting open air markets but started using NFC-based payments regularly after Google Pay/Wallet finally launched here.

Poll: Have you ever had to return a phone because of a defect? https://www.androidauthority.com/return-phone-defect-poll-3202829/ https://www.androidauthority.com/return-phone-defect-poll-3202829/#respond Wed, 31 Aug 2022 08:33:39 +0000 https://www.androidauthority.com/return-phone-defect-poll-3202829/ Samsung Galaxy Fold review on table with screen lit

Smartphones are pretty complicated gadgets, as the small size and cutting-edge tech means production can be more challenging than many other electronics and appliances. So we can understand if a few defective handsets sometimes slip through the cracks.

Have you had to return a defective phone, though? That’s the question we’re asking in our featured poll article today, so tap a choice below and leave a comment if you’ve got more to share.

Just to be clear, we aren’t talking about minor issues like the phone running a little warmer than expected or the fingerprint scanner occasionally having errors. These things happen on many phones today.

Instead, we’re talking about major defects here. These issues can include dead pixels or major screen tinting, seriously abnormal heating, the device catching fire or smoking, consistently horrible battery life, poor connectivity, cameras not working properly (if at all), extremely slow/buggy software, or terrible build quality.

Today’s smartphones generally have fast charging capabilities, with a full charge possible in an hour or less for many brands. So even if your phone hits zero, you don’t have to wait long to get up and running again.

But do you actually let your device hit zero before reaching for the charger? That’s what we’d like to find out in our featured poll today. So choose and answer below and leave a comment if you’ve got more on your mind.

We can see why some people would let their phone hit zero before charging. Maybe you aren’t extremely dependent on your phone for entertainment and communication, using a tablet or PC instead, or being content with the TV. So a dead phone might not be a big deal in that case. There are also those times when you might not have any choice but to let your phone hit zero, such as if you aren’t near a power point or power bank but are still using the handset.

Then again, we can totally understand if you plug in before the device hits zero. I know I try to charge my phone before it dies because I simply don’t want to deal with a dead phone at an inopportune time.

Smartphone displays have ballooned in size over the years, from 4-inch Android devices and 3.5-inch iPhones of bygone years to today’s 6.7-inch or higher screen sizes on many flagships.

But how big is too big for you? That’s what we want to find out with our featured poll today. So give us your answer below and leave a comment if you’d like to elaborate.

It’s worth noting that inch measurements alone aren’t the only important factor when it comes to ascertaining a smartphone’s overall size. We’ve also got to take a phone’s overall design, screen aspect ratio and bezels into account. After all, today’s 6-inch phones aren’t quite the same animal as 6-inch phones from 2014 like the HUAWEI Ascend Mate 7 and Google Nexus 6.  Nevertheless, we’re talking about today’s phones with their minimal bezels and 20:9 screen ratios.

Me? I find that 6.8-inches is the absolute furthest I’d go before things get too chunky. Otherwise, you can let your voice be heard via the poll above.

Android TV or Google TV is the most popular TV box platform around, also powering a host of smart TVs. Between the Google integration, variety of apps, and somewhat open nature, there are plenty of reasons to use the platform. However, these devices often come with a paltry amount of storage.

Fortunately, Google recently rolled out a new Google TV update to address matters. This update includes an option to quickly free up storage as well as a tweak to reduce storage-related errors when installing apps. That got us wondering whether readers have received low storage warnings on their Google TV or Android TV devices. So let us know by taking the poll below.

Obviously, this question is aimed at people who own Google TV/Android TV boxes or TVs in the first place. So go ahead and skip the poll if you don’t have these devices in your household.

As for me? Well, I’ve got an NVIDIA Shield TV Tube and I receive low storage alerts every few weeks at the very least. It doesn’t help that I accidentally bought the wrong microSD card for the device. Nevertheless, I hope that the “free up space” option in the new Google TV update eventually lands on NVIDIA devices.

Smartphones are available at a variety of price points, starting at the sub-$100 bracket all the way to today’s $1,800 foldable phones. Needless to say, there’s something for every budget out there.

But where do you draw the line? What’s the most you’re willing to spend on a smartphone? That’s the topic of our featured poll today, so let us know by choosing an answer below. Just to clarify, we’re talking about an off-contract/prepaid purchase.

We’re guessing that there are loads of people who’d choose the $200 to $400 price brackets. This price segment is firmly in the volume-pushing mid-range territory, and stiff competition here means there are plenty of phones that deliver fantastic value for money.

We wouldn’t be surprised if the $1,400+ choice doesn’t get a lot of votes, although we can definitely see a few foldable fans choosing this option.

One Android 13 feature that’s gone under the radar is the ability to adjust your phone’s display resolution. But the feature has been available on phones from other Android OEMs for years now.

A developer has even harnessed the stable Android 13 update to unofficially bring display resolution adjustments to the Pixel 6 Pro. And that got us wondering whether Android Authority readers tweak the display resolution on their own phones. So let us know via the poll below.

The biggest reason to tweak your phone’s display resolution is that dropping the resolution can claw back some battery life — the phone simply doesn’t need to push as many pixels around. This is particularly true of phones with QHD+ or 4K screens, but we’ve also seen phones with FHD+ screens allowing you to drop the resolution to HD+ resolution. On the other end of the spectrum, some phones might be set to a lower resolution out of the box (such as the Xiaomi Mi 11), so we understand if you actually increased the display resolution instead.

We’ve also seen phones from the likes of OPPO and OnePlus offering automatic screen resolution switching. This way, the phone will switch to a higher resolution for some tasks (e.g. viewing media) and drop to a lower resolution for other scenarios (e.g. low battery).
