Dash cams are incredibly handy to have in your car, potentially saving you loads of cash in the event of a crash. But it looks like Google wants to reduce your reliance on a standalone dash cam by turning your Android phone into one.

Google seems to have mistakenly pushed out an internal beta version of the Personal Safety app (version 2023.04.27.532191641.8-dogfood), and 9to5Google dug into this version to find and enable a dash cam feature.

  • Apple has announced a host of accessibility features coming later this year.
  • Personal Voice might be the most innovative feature of them all.
  • This replicates your own voice with 15 minutes of audio recordings.

Android phones bring loads of accessibility features to the table, from Live Caption and Sound Amplifier to Live Transcribe and more. But Apple is stepping up its game in this area by announcing a raft of upcoming features, and we really want to see one particular option on Android.

Personal Voice functionality is perhaps the coolest upcoming feature revealed by the iPhone maker today. Apple says people can generate their own voice on an iPhone or iPad by simply reading 15 minutes of randomized text prompts. Your Personal Voice is created locally rather than making use of the cloud, therefore safeguarding your privacy.

  • Google plans to start deleting old, inactive accounts starting this December.
  • The purge will only affect accounts that have been active for two years or longer.
  • Google will send multiple notifications to the user before the deletion process starts.

If you have a Google account and haven’t logged on in a while, you may want to do a quick check-in. Google plans to start deleting inactive accounts later this year.

In a blog post, the Mountain View-based firm announced a change to its inactive accounts policy. Back in 2020, the company said it would remove content stored in an inactive account, but would keep the account. According to the blog, Google says it will now delete accounts along with the content if the account has been inactive for two years or longer.

  • According to a trusted leaker, the iPhone 16 Pro models could be larger than we’ve seen so far from Pro variants.
  • It’s possible the larger sizing could lead to a redesign.
  • The leaker also reconfirmed that periscope zoom lenses are in the works.

We expect to see the iPhone 15 series launch in September 2023. We already have plenty of leaks for those models, but what about the 2024 series? Believe it or not, leaks are already coming in for those phones, presumably to land as the iPhone 16 family.

Now, a trusted leaker says the iPhone 16 Pro models — presumably the 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, unless Apple changes its naming strategy — could become much larger. Leaker Unknownz21 (via MacRumors) says the iPhone 16 Pro could have a display size of around 6.3 inches, while the 16 Pro Max could land at a hefty 6.9 inches. This would be about 0.2 inches larger than the expected dimensions of the iPhone 15 Pro series, which we expect to be the same as the iPhone 14 Pro series (6.1 inches for the Pro and 6.7 inches for the Pro Max).

  • The ACSI 2022-2023 report shows Samsung losing ground to Apple.
  • The two companies had matched scores last year, but this year, Apple gained.
  • Meanwhile, Google also gained some traction.

Each year, the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) releases a report surrounding opinions about the best smartphones in the United States. Last year, we saw Americans’ views on Samsung and Apple being pretty much equal. Each company received a score of 80/100.

However, the ACSI 2022-2023 report tells a different story. It looks like consumers in the US think Apple is doing a slightly better job as its score went up to 81/100. Samsung, unfortunately, did not make an equal gain, so it is stuck with last year’s score. This means that, officially, consumer sentiment towards Apple is stronger than Samsung, in the US at least.

  • The European Commission has given the go-ahead to Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard acquisition.
  • However, the EC also shared concerns about the merger.
  • The UK Competition and Markets Authority has issued a response to the EC’s ruling.

Since last year, Microsoft has had its hands full, trying to convince regulators to accept its purchase of Activision Blizzard. On the heels of the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) rejection, Microsoft just got a much-needed win.

Today, the EU’s regulatory body, the European Commission (EC), announced that it has approved Microsoft’s bid to acquire Activision Blizzard. According to the EC, this approval is conditional on “full compliance with the commitments offered by Microsoft.”

  • There is now a Google Drive spam folder to catch unwanted, unsolicited shares.
  • The system works just like the Gmail spam folder.
  • This feature should be available for all users by the end of May 2023 but it is already working for many.

If you use Google Drive (and really, who doesn’t?), you’ve no doubt been hit with spam shares from people you don’t know. Right now, I have hundreds of shares from users like “Baby69” and “SeCret ParTner NeeDed,” all of which are likely scams. To make this matter worse, Drive, by default, notifies users of each new share, which forced me to simply shut off all share notifications from the app.

Now, finally, there is a Google Drive spam folder to catch this garbage. Google announced this new feature pretty quietly via a blog post during Google I/O, so you might have missed it. Regardless, I now have the feature live in my Drive app, so it’s clearly rolling out at a solid clip.

  • T-Mobile is once again offering customers free MLB.TV.
  • You can sign up for it through the T-Mobile Tuesdays app starting on May 23, 2023.
  • This applies to T-Mobile phone plans and in-home internet subscribers, as well as select Metro by T-Mobile customers.

For years now, one of the most popular T-Mobile perks for subscribers has been an annual subscription to MLB.TV. This is the place you can watch out-of-market home and away games as well as pre- and post-game content. Typically, this service costs $149.99 at the start of each season.

Back in March, T-Mobile once again offered free MLB.TV to customers. However, if you missed the opportunity to grab it then, you have another chance. On May 23, 2023, T-Mo will re-open sign-ups for the baseball streaming service, once again at zero cost.

Original article: We’ve become so accustomed to Apple’s iterative smartphone launches each year that the iPhone 14 event represented one of the most exciting in recent memory. Sure, the base model was practically identical to its predecessor, but Apple gave us a Plus instead of a Mini, and the Pro devices introduced a brand-new punch hole display.

The instantly memeable Dynamic Island (Apple’s fancy name for the screen cutout and its corresponding software enhancements) is the biggest shakeup to the iPhone design in years. In many ways, it made up for a lack of innovation elsewhere in Apple’s flagship phone lineup, with plenty of consumers deciding there was no need to upgrade just yet. Will 2023’s iPhone 15 series offer more than just superficial improvements and convince more people to make the jump? Let’s find out.

Binging is the new normal for watching TV. Fans can race through entire seasons of their favorite shows as fast as they like. The trend arguably started with DVD boxed sets but really kicked into high gear with the advent of streaming and seasons of Netflix and its competitors‘ original series dropped all at once as opposed to the old weekly rollout. Some shows have really thrived in the binging age, with more new titles launching every week, so it makes sense to ask, which are the best binge shows you can watch?

Amazon Prime is one of the few retail subscription services that just about anyone can make use of, but one of its best features is frequently lost in the crowd of competitors. Amazon Prime Video has a huge library of content, including original shows and movies, that rivals even the most popular services like Netflix, Disney Plus, and Hulu.

In fact, the service has grown to the point that there is a standalone Amazon Prime Video subscription in several markets that’s cheaper than a full Amazon Prime subscription.

The best part is that it’s available on every platform and completely free, as long as you’re okay with ads. However, a paid Spotify Premium subscription brings plenty of useful extras like the ability to download songs, better audio quality, unlimited song skipping, and more. But like any app, Spotify has the occasional bug or glitch, and things don’t work as expected. Here’s a look at some common Spotify problems and how to fix them.

Are you familiar with the term “goblincore?” I wasn’t, but Spotify decided it was the perfect phrase to introduce me to its Niche Mix feature. I laughed. I showed my colleagues here at Android Authority, and they laughed. Then, I looked up the term goblincore and found that it’s an aesthetic based on parts of nature not traditionally considered beautiful, like snails, moss, and mushrooms. I laughed a little more and wondered why Spotify chose this example to bring me into the world of hyper-specific playlists. Only after all of this laughing and research did I finally listen to the playlist and decide that, honestly, maybe Spotify Niche Mixes are onto something.

Wait, what’s a Spotify Niche Mix?

Nanoleaf’s new Essentials lights are great, but reveal Matter’s shortcomings https://www.androidauthority.com/nanoleaf-essentials-matter-review-3320085/ https://www.androidauthority.com/nanoleaf-essentials-matter-review-3320085/#respond Sun, 14 May 2023 17:00:29 +0000 https://www.androidauthority.com/nanoleaf-essentials-matter-review-3320085/

Nanoleaf is probably best known for its light panels, but it also sells something called the Essentials line, consisting of more conventional smart bulbs and lightstrips. Until recently their problem was that while they supported Thread, the only way you could take advantage of that was usually Apple HomeKit or Nanoleaf’s own Thread ecosystem. In theory, the new Essentials Matter open up support to Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, and anything else with Matter over Thread  — but should you make them the foundation of your smart home’s lighting?

About this article: I tested the Nanoleaf Matter A19 bulb and Matter Lightstrip for about one month. The units were provided by Nanoleaf, but Nanoleaf had no say in the published content.

AI is taking over the world, but I’m not ready for it,” is a sentiment I shared with you a few weeks ago. My apprehensions about generative AI haven’t changed since then, but as I heard the word “AI” being uttered for the 100th time during this week’s Google I/O, a quick realization dawned on me: I was OK with that. Maybe not as ecstatic as the hundreds of I/O attendees clapping and laughing like a ’90s sitcom track, but still, relatively OK and comfortable with Google’s approach to generative AI.

I’ve since rewatched the conference once more while rewinding specific moments many times over to analyze them. I’ve also given myself a couple of days to re-assess whether my rose-tinted Google glasses were affecting my judgment here. The result is I’m still generally comfortable with Google’s AI approach. Where OpenAI’s GPT4 presentation and Microsoft’s CoPilot launch left me in awe but also intimidated and concerned, Google’s take seems smartly selective and restrained.

The AirPods and AirPods Pro are some of the best true wireless earbuds you can get and are an absolute no-brainer if you have Apple devices. The speedy connections, easy access to information, seamless cross-device usage between iPhones, iPads, and Macs, and of course, their excellent audio quality are why AirPods are so popular. However, like any tech, AirPods aren’t without problems, and it’s the worst when you put on a pair only to find them without a charge. If you’ve remembered to plug in your earbuds, the lack of a charge might be because of something else. Here’s what to do if your AirPods and AirPods case are not charging.

The one thing that immediately struck me the moment I opened the Pixel 7a box was how phenomenally well-built this phone is. In hand, it is virtually indistinguishable from my more expensive Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, despite the switch from a glass to a plastic back. Sure, the similar white color helps, but everything about the Pixel 7a feels solid and premium — way more than the Pixel 6a or any other A series phone ever did.

Google isn’t joking this time around. At $499, this midrange phone is excellent on paper, and even better in reality. Just start counting all the ways the Pixel 7a is better than the 6a and you’ll notice that the upgrades stack up to easily justify the $50 markup in price (if not more). But could it be the last A series Pixel from Google? Rumors suggest so, but I think otherwise.

You’re not alone if you’re a little unsure what Google’s strategy for its smart home ecosystem is right now. Shortly after killing off support for third-party smart displays, Mountain View launched the Pixel Tablet at Google I/O 2023 — a dockable large screen with built-in Google Home functionality. In other words, a smart display.

The Pixel Tablet is certainly an intriguing product, but is this the future of Nest Hubs or simply another experiment Google will have forgotten about in 12 months’ time? Either way, there’s just one problem; who wants to spend $499/€680 to control their smart lights?

Poll: Is $1,799 too much for the Google Pixel Fold? https://www.androidauthority.com/poll-pixel-fold-price-3323039/ https://www.androidauthority.com/poll-pixel-fold-price-3323039/#respond Fri, 12 May 2023 14:00:13 +0000 https://www.androidauthority.com/poll-pixel-fold-price-3323039/

When the Google Pixel Fold price started to leak, I admit I was dubious. This was Google, after all, and its Pixel phones are priced very competitively, so why would the Pixel Fold be any different? I was holding out hope that the rumors were wrong and we’d all be pleasantly surprised by a significantly cheaper retail price. Then the bombshell was dropped at I/O: $1,799. Dollar-to-pound/euro, it’s even more expensive in the UK at £1,749 and Germany at €1,899. Ouch.

So what gives? We’ve been pondering this for a while here at Android Authority and we think there are a few explanations to this pricing strategy. First and foremost, foldable phones are still expensive to make, especially if you’re going to go out of your way to design the hinge and display a little differently, as we noted in our hands-on with the Pixel Fold.

Email is one of the oldest and most important forms of online communication. It’s a service many of us use every single day. There are tons of email services and email apps that accompany them. Some may only have a single account on something like Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo. Their individual apps will give you the best experience. However, most people have email apps from multiple providers and want something that can aggregate it all into one spot. If you’re looking for something new, here are the best email apps for Android. The latter half of the decade was rough for email clients, as some of the best (such as Inbox by Gmail and Astro) went down in flames. We will miss them greatly.

We’d also like to give an honorable mention to Hey (Google Play link). It’s a really interesting and entertaining email app, but it gives you a new email address and is really expensive, so it’s difficult to put it on the list. It has some decent features, though, so check it out if you want another option.

  • Development has been halted on the popular Skyline emulator for Android.
  • This emulator allowed you to play Nintendo Switch games on your mobile device.
  • Two of the developers have since announced a new emulator to pick up where Skyline left off.

Update: May 12, 2023 (4:42 AM ET): It looks like there might be some good news for those wanting to emulate Nintendo Switch games on their Android phones. A new emulator from two of the Skyline developers will pick up where the discontinued emulator left off.

In an FAQ post on the Strato Discord channel, the team notes that Strato is a “continuation” of Skyline by two of the four main Skyline developers. The FAQ notes that this is still an open-source project, but that there’s no APK available just yet. Nor is there a timeline for the emulator to be released.

The Motorola Razr’s huge cover display is shown off in new leak (Updated) https://www.androidauthority.com/motorola-razr-cover-3317489/ https://www.androidauthority.com/motorola-razr-cover-3317489/#respond Fri, 12 May 2023 08:20:39 +0000 https://www.androidauthority.com/motorola-razr-cover-3317489/ Motorola Razr 40 Ultra

  • Motorola confirmed its upcoming Razr would have the largest cover display on a flip phone in the market.
  • A new leak shows what that cover display will look like on this Razr 40 Ultra handset.
  • Subsequent leaked images have also showed off three color options.

Update: May 12, 2023 (4:17 AM ET): Tipster Evan Blass has posted even more Razr 40 Ultra renders. This time, the renders show off several color options while also revealing the Razr 40 Ultra moniker.

The leaker also posted even more images on his (locked) Twitter account if you’d like to view more. Nevertheless, this is certainly looking like the biggest cover screen on a clamshell foldable.

  • OPPO has confirmed that it’s shutting down its chip design unit.
  • The company cited “uncertainties” in the global economy and smartphone landscape.
  • The firm added that the change won’t affect devices already using the MariSilicon X chip.

OPPO got into the custom chip game in 2021 when it announced the MariSilicon X imaging NPU, shipping in the Find X5 series and several other handsets. The company followed up with the MariSilicon Y Bluetooth audio chip, but there’s some bad news for the firm’s chip design efforts.

OPPO confirmed to Android Authority that it’s shutting down its ZEKU chip design unit, responsible for the manufacturer’s custom chips.

Spigen brings style and protection to the Galaxy S23 https://www.androidauthority.com/spigen-style-protection-galaxy-s23-3322499/ https://www.androidauthority.com/spigen-style-protection-galaxy-s23-3322499/#respond Fri, 12 May 2023 04:00:53 +0000 https://www.androidauthority.com/spigen-style-protection-galaxy-s23-3322499/

The Samsung Galaxy S23 devices are some of the best smartphones you can get. But their size and all-glass build make them vulnerable to serious damage in case of accidental bumps and drops. A good case and screen protector go a long way in keeping these expensive phones in pristine condition, and that’s where Spigen steps up! Spigen is a popular go-to for anyone looking for the perfect mix of style and protection, and the case maker has knocked it out of the park with its Galaxy S23 collection.

The company’s Galaxy S23 cases are made with high-quality materials and do a great job when it comes to keeping your phone safe from bumps, drops, and scratches. Spigen is also an official partner in the Samsung Mobile Accessory Partner Program (SMAPP), so you can expect precision fits and seamless looks with every Spigen Galaxy S23 case. With various designs, styles, and levels of protection, Spigen has an excellent case for every Galaxy S23 owner. Let’s take a look!

Spigen Ultra Hybrid

The Galaxy S23 devices are good-looking phones, so it’s a shame to have to cover it up with a protective case or cover, even if necessary. The Spigen Ultra Hybrid is an excellent choice if you want to show off the phone’s design. The transparent case is made with a polycarbonate back and TPU bumper and uses Air Cushion technology to provide outstanding protection.

The Spigen Ultra Hybrid lets the phone’s looks stand out while keeping it safe and sound. Spigen’s attention to detail shines through in the case’s design, with the precise camera cutouts ensuring extra protection with a clean fit. Transparent cases tend to yellow over time, but Spigen helps reduce that problem with its Dura Clear technology to maximize yellowing resistance. And it doesn’t require compromising on features either, with the case thin enough to allow wireless charging and NFC payments using Samsung Pay and other apps.

Spigen Liquid Air

Credit: Spigen

There’s a good reason why the Liquid Air is one of Spigen’s best-selling cases for the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, with the slim, form-fitting case offering the perfect mix of style and professionalism. The truss-patterned back and side ridges look great and add grip and protection. Adding to its protective features are a raised bezel around the display, precise raised camera cutouts, covered buttons, and Air Cushion technology for enhanced corner protection.

Like with the Ultra Hybrid, you won’t have any issues with wireless charging and NFC payments with the Spigen Liquid Air. If you’re looking for something different from the standard matte black, the Abyss Green color option is an excellent way to go.

Spigen Tough Armor

All Spigen cases offer solid protection for your Galaxy S23. But if you want to ensure complete all-protection, it doesn’t get much better than the Spigen Tough Armor. The dual-layer case combines a TPU interior and polycarbonate exterior shell with an impact-resistant foam layer. Along with Spigen’s Air Cushion technology for shock dissipation and enhanced corner safety, it’s no surprise that the Tough Armor meets military-grade drop protection standards.

Precise cutouts for the camera, a raised lip around the display, and covered buttons complete the heavy-duty protection picture. And Spigen manages to do so without layering on the thickness and weight. It’s thin enough to allow wireless charging without compromising safety in any way. The built-in kickstand is a handy bonus and lets you prop the phone up in the landscape orientation. Joining the Tough Armor’s signature black and gunmetal color options is the new stylish-looking Abyss Green.

Spigen Optik Armor

Cases like the Ultra Hybrid, Liquid Air, and Tough Armor are popular choices. But Spigen has plenty of other unique cases available as well. The Galaxy S23 series’ standout feature is its camera. And if you want to ensure complete protection, the Spigen Optik Armor is the case you want. The Optik Armor ticks all the right boxes when it comes to standard device protection, with a TPU and polycarbonate hybrid build, a textured coating for extra grip, and Air Cushion technology to keep the phone safe from drops.

But the Optik Armor earns its moniker with its Snap Lens Protection technology, a cover that slides and snaps into place to keep the camera dust and damage-free when you aren’t using it. Even when the cover slide is open, the precise cutouts and raised bezels around the lenses keep the camera setup safe in case of unfortunate accidents.

Spigen Rugged Armor and Rugged Armor Pro for Samsung accessories

Spigen’s protective capabilities extend beyond just the Samsung Galaxy S23 smartphones. If you are a part of the Samsung ecosystem, you likely have accessories like the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Buds and other devices like the Galaxy Tab. The Spigen Rugged Armor and Armor Pro cases for these devices have you covered.

Like any watch you wear on your wrist all day, the Galaxy Watch is susceptible to scratches and accidental bumps. Touch is an essential input method, so you want to ensure that the screen remains pristine. That’s possible with the Rugged Armor Pro case and strap for the Galaxy Watch. It gives the watch a sporty look, while the raised bezel keeps the display safe from scratches and bumps. You don’t have to worry about losing functionality, either. Precise cutouts on the side and bottom provide easy access to the watch’s buttons and features like heart rate monitoring.

The Rugged Armor case for the Galaxy Buds has a sleek and stylish two-piece design that provides comprehensive coverage and plenty of grip. Built with Hybrid Polymer technology, it keeps the earbuds’ charging case free from scratches and safe from bumps and drops. You also get a metal carabiner to make it easy to carry around.

And finally, there’s the Spigen Rugged Armor for the Galaxy Tab. Anyone familiar with Spigen’s case will be right at home with the Rugged Armor, one of its most popular options. This time, Spigen has enlarged it to bring the same level of protection and grip to Samsung’s tablets. It’s slim and light but with ample protection and is a great way to keep your tablet safe.

Spigen screen protectors for the Galaxy S23

Spigen takes its phone protection to the next level with two excellent screen protectors for the Galaxy S23 series. The Spigen EZ Fit tempered glass screen protector is available for the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus. It has a 9H hardness rating for scratch resistance. It’s also thin enough to ensure no difference in the viewing and touch experience. The included installation tool makes applying the screen protector a breeze on the Galaxy S23.

If you’re looking for something other than tempered glass, the Spigen NeoFlex is the way to go. The thin film screen protector keeps the display scratch-free and is barely noticeable with everyday use. It’s a great option if you are looking for screen protection for the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s curved display.

Spigen Essential wireless charger

The Spigen Essential wireless charger offers 15W fast charging capabilities with Air Boost technology. The charging pad has a sleek design that won’t look out of place on any desk or bedside table. Spigen has put the device through various rigorous tests for durability and reliability. These include high and low-temperature tests and drop tests in real-world scenarios to ensure the wireless charger can withstand harsh conditions.

Spigen’s cases for the Galaxy S23 offer a perfect mix of style and protection. A variety of options are available to perfectly suit your needs. From rugged cases with built-in kickstands to excellent transparent options to show off the phone’s design and everything in between. But Spigen does more than just keep your phone safe. It has a vast collection of cases and covers for a variety of accessories like smartwatches and earbuds. And practical peripherals like wireless chargers are a great way to make the most of your smartphone experience.

Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover cards are all acceptable registered cards to Apple Pay when paying at McDonald’s, provided they are issued by a US bank.

You can use Apple Pay whether you’re in the restaurant, swinging by the drive-thru, or ordering via the McDonald’s app. We’ll run you through how each of them works.

  • Oura now integrates with Peloton via Google Health Connect.
  • Peloton users can view their workout details and biometrics in the Oura app.
  • Workouts will also be incorporated into Oura Ring users’ daily scores.

Google’s Health Connect brings plenty of power to one of the smallest members of the wearables market, the Oura Ring. As was announced at Google I/O, Oura now adds integration with a number of popular health platforms. This includes Peloton, the cult-favorite fitness app for at-home workouts.

Each time you sweat through a Peloton class wearing your ring, you can now open the companion app to see your details and biometrics on the home screen. You can even dig into further details by tapping on the workout summary. To maintain Oura’s holistic approach to well-being, users’ Readiness and Activity Scores will also automatically reflect the effort expended during Peloton workouts.

In our experience reviewing the Oura Ring 3, these scores, as well as a Sleep score, facilitate a balanced approach to wellness. Oura tailors the scores according to users’ goals and habits, providing a personalized tracking experience with digestible insights.

The Oura Ring already boasted integration with Strava, a widely-used social platform for runners and cyclists. Integration with Peloton is the second option to allow users to directly import workout data into the Oura app. It’s an exciting step for the device and for Oura users interested in a more dedicated fitness tracking tool.

With the release of the Pixel Fold, Google has officially made its debut in the foldable smartphone market. At $1,799, though, it’s clear that the Pixel Fold is a premium device with plenty of cutting-edge features. But at the same time, it retains many of the signature Pixel-exclusive AI and camera features we’ve come to expect over the years. So given this shared heritage, you might be wondering: how does the Pixel Fold stack up vs the Pixel 7 Pro and which one should you buy?

Google Pixel Fold vs Pixel 7 Pro: At a glance

In a hurry? Here’s a quick summary of the differences between the Pixel Fold and the Pixel 7 Pro.

  • When unfolded, the Pixel Fold offers 66% more display area than the Pixel 7 Pro.
  • The Pixel 7 Pro features larger camera sensors on the rear, which should help it gather more light. However, both smartphones share Google’s computational photography strengths.
  • The front-facing cameras on the Pixel Fold have a narrower field of view. That said, you can simply use the rear cameras when the phone is in its unfolded state.
  • Both phones offer the same biometric unlocking options. However, the fingerprint sensor on the Pixel Fold is side-mounted instead of under the display.
  • The Pixel Fold relies on a smaller battery than the Pixel 7 Pro and does not offer reverse wireless charging.
  • Google’s Pixel 7 Pro features a water and dust protection rating. However, the Pixel Fold lacks official dust resistance due to its hinge mechanism.
  • The Pixel 7 Pro retails at a considerably lower price than the Pixel Fold.

Even though it’s technically a first-generation product, the Pixel Fold shares many of the same underpinnings as other Google smartphones. Most notably, the AI-focused Tensor G2 SoC is present on both the Pixel Fold and Pixel 7 Pro. It’s undoubtedly a flagship-tier chip, even if it lags behind some of the latest competition, like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

The two phones also share a similar design language, which Google first introduced with the Pixel 6 series. The metal frame and camera visor have now become distinct elements of the Pixel lineup.

The Pixel Fold features the same chipset and design language as the Pixel 7 Pro.

Look just a little closer, though, and the similarities quickly vanish. Of course, the main difference is that the Pixel Fold houses twice as many displays as the Pixel 7 Pro. At 5.8 inches, Google’s foldable features a smaller cover display than the Pixel 7 Pro’s 6.7-inch panel. However, unfolding the former reveals a 7.6-inch display that’s nearly as large as some tablets. In fact, the foldable grants you 66% more display area compared to the Pixel 7 Pro.

For both of the phones in question, Google has packed bright and vibrant OLED displays with 120Hz refresh rates. They all get similarly bright, with a peak brightness of around 1,500 nits.

There are similarities on the software side too, with the same three-year feature update commitment. On top of that, you get two years of Android security updates. With that in mind, you’ll get approximately half a year’s worth of additional updates if you buy the Pixel Fold.

The Pixel Fold isn't dust resistant like the Pixel 7 Pro, but it's well protected against water.

One clear advantage of Google’s foldable smartphone is that the base model includes 256GB of storage and 12GB of RAM. That’s double the storage and 50% more memory than the Pixel 7 Pro. Having said that, you can pay to upgrade both on the latter.

Moving on to durability, Google joins Samsung as one of the only foldable smartphone brands to offer water resistance. The IPX8 rating means you won’t have to worry about accidental splashes, but you’ll need to keep the phone away from dust. The Pixel 7 Pro, with its IP68 rating, is much more well-protected in this regard. The Pixel Fold’s cover display is protected with Gorilla Glass Victus, which matches the Pixel 7 Pro. On the inside, meanwhile, it gets the same ultra-thin glass that Samsung uses on the Galaxy Z Fold 4.

Google Pixel Fold vs Pixel 7 Pro: Size comparison

You do pay a small price for the Pixel Fold’s flexibility in the form of extra weight (71g difference), which translates to an extra 33% vs the Pixel 7 Pro. Not to mention, the added thickness when folded will result in a tighter fit in your pockets. Having said that, Google has done a decent job of minimizing the Pixel Fold’s footprint. The phone features a waterdrop-style hinge mechanism, which allows it to fold flat without any gaps.

The Pixel Fold is wider than the Pixel 7 Pro when folded, which may be just too wide for one-handed use. Google’s non-folding flagship boasts a slightly curved display, making it feel narrower in the hand. Finally, it goes without saying that you’ll need to use two hands whenever you use the Pixel Fold in its unfolded state.

We’ve noted on several occasions that the Pixel 7 Pro is already quite a substantial phone. Google’s foldable takes that up a notch, so I’d recommend trying out both devices before pulling the trigger.

Any comparison involving Google’s smartphones would be incomplete without a camera comparison. Let’s start with the good news. You get a triple camera array on the back of both, the Pixel Fold and Pixel 7 Pro. However, the image sensors aren’t the same on both devices.

The Pixel Fold features a 48MP primary, 10.8MP ultrawide, and 10.8 5x telephoto lens. Meanwhile, the Pixel 7 Pro offers a 50MP main shooter alongside 12MP ultrawide and 48MP 5x telephoto cameras. Right off the bat, it’s clear that the Pixel Fold loses out in terms of resolution. But there’s also another aspect that you may notice unless you look closely at the spec sheet. All three sensors on the Pixel Fold are slightly smaller vs the ones you’ll find on the Pixel 7 Pro.

The Pixel Fold packs slightly smaller camera sensors compared to the Pixel 7 Pro.

We’ve spoken at length about the importance of camera sensor sizes in the past. So it goes without saying that the Pixel 7 Pro has the advantage on paper. Simultaneously, however, Google’s smartphones are known to have some of the best post-processing on the market. We’ve seen the company use its computational photography tech to deliver some impressive results in recent times. In fact, the affordable Google Pixel 7a rivals more expensive smartphones with better on-paper camera hardware.

All of that is to say the Pixel Fold will still deliver excellent results in most shooting conditions. We’ve rated the Pixel 7 Pro as one of the best camera phones money can buy and expect Google’s foldable to perform nearly as well. Rest assured, though, we’ll put the Pixel Fold’s cameras through their paces in our full review.

For a glimpse of Google’s photography prowess, here’s a quick look at some sample photos from the Pixel 7 Pro.

The Pixel Fold also features two front-facing cameras, one for each display. Once again, though, they’re technically not quite as good as the single one present on the Pixel 7 Pro. The latter also features a wider field of view, letting you fit large groups in your shots comfortably. Alternatively, unfolding the Pixel Fold lets you use all three rear cameras — simply frame your shot on the cover display.

Google Pixel Fold vs Pixel 7 Pro: Battery life

The Pixel Fold and Pixel 7 Pro share identical processing hardware, so we can expect similar battery life from a chipset standpoint. In our testing, we’ve found that the Pixel 7 Pro’s battery lasts a full day and then some. That’s thanks to the large 5,000mAh battery, which is larger than the one Google has included in the Pixel Fold.

Going by that spec alone, we can estimate that the foldable won’t last as long. Moreover, battery drain will accelerate quickly when you use the inner display on the Pixel Fold. Remember, the Pixel Fold sports a 66% larger display vs the Pixel 7 Pro when unfolded. Of course, that also means you can earn back a lot of endurance if you use the smaller cover screen for most tasks.

The Pixel Fold's smaller battery may require more frequent top-ups.

It’s more of the same when it comes to fast charging. The Pixel 7 Pro can take nearly two full hours to charge from 0-100. The same will likely hold true for the Pixel Fold as well, depending on how well the device manages heat. Both phones ship without an adapter in the box, but you can use any USB Power Delivery PPS charger.

While both smartphones support Qi wireless charging, the Pixel Fold tops out at 7.5W vs the Pixel 7 Pro’s 12W. Furthermore, the Pixel 7 Pro supports faster 23W wireless charging on the Pixel Stand (2nd gen) as well as reverse wireless charging. Also known as Battery Share, this handy feature lets you top up accessories like Bluetooth earbuds by letting your phone act as a wireless charger.

Google Pixel Fold vs Pixel 7 Pro: Price

Google Pixel Fold opened up in garden

  • Pixel Fold: Starts at $1,799
  • Pixel 7 Pro: Starts at $899

Unlike some other smartphone brands, Google doesn’t charge as much for the Pixel 7 Pro relative to its premium internals. At a starting price of $899, it undercuts competition like the Galaxy S23 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro. Simultaneously, it delivers impressive build quality and camera performance on par with or even beyond those phones.

However, the company hasn’t followed the same strategy with its debutant foldable. The Pixel Fold launches at a whopping $1,799. That’s the same as Samsung charges for its premier folding smartphone. Having said that, the base variant of the Pixel 7 Pro only ships with 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM. If you need 256GB instead, you’ll have to pay $100 more, which brings the total to $999. That narrows the gap between the two Google flagship smartphones a little, but there’s no doubt that the Fold is much more expensive.

If it helps, we’ve seen deals on the Pixel 7 Pro that knock a few hundred dollars off its launch price. You’d have to wait a few months for that to happen with the Pixel Fold as it hasn’t even hit store shelves yet. It’s already up for pre-order, with sales officially kicking off in June.

Google Pixel Fold vs Pixel 7 Pro: Which one should you buy?

Does the Pixel Fold offer $800+ worth of value over the Pixel 7 Pro? It depends on your intended use cases for each phone. If you see yourself being more productive with a larger display, the foldable is certainly worth considering. However, if you were hoping for even better camera performance from a Google smartphone, the extra cash won’t get you anywhere.

From a pure numbers perspective, it makes sense to go for the Pixel 7 Pro. It features a premium build, excellent image quality, and solid battery life. But all of those will also likely be nearly true of the Pixel Fold with the added utility of a larger canvas. So which one would you pick?

After months of leaks and speculation, Google has finally taken the wraps off the Pixel Fold. This marks the company’s first foray into the foldable smartphone market, where it has to compete against established offerings from Samsung and only a few others. And even though Google’s smartphone lineup has traditionally undercut rival flagships, that’s not the case here. The Pixel Fold goes up vs Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 in terms of both form factor and price this time around. Does Google have what it takes to compete? Let’s find out.

Google Pixel Fold vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: At a glance

Need an express summary? Here’s a quick rundown of the key differences between the Google Pixel Fold vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4:

  • The Pixel Fold features a waterdrop-style hinge, allowing it to fold flatter and with a less prominent crease than the Galaxy Z Fold 4.
  • Google’s foldable is shorter and wider than the Galaxy Z Fold 4. This makes the Pixel Fold feel like a regular smartphone when folded.
  • The Galaxy Z Fold 4 features a slightly more powerful and efficient Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC compared to the Pixel Fold’s Tensor G2 chip.
  • The Pixel Fold offers longer-range (5x) optical zoom vs the Galaxy Z Fold 4’s 3x telephoto lens.
  • The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is 20g lighter than the Pixel Fold.
  • The Pixel Fold packs a 9% larger battery. However, chipset differences may nullify that advantage.
  • The Galaxy Z Fold 4 supports Samsung’s S Pen, which is a separate purchase. Google didn’t add stylus support to its foldable.

Samsung has played it rather safe with its foldable lineup of late. The past three generations have shared similar designs and only brought incremental improvements like water resistance and an under-display selfie camera. Even if you know about the minor differences between each Galaxy Fold, chances are you won’t be able to quickly identify which generation you’re looking at. The Pixel Fold, meanwhile, opts for a radically different design compared to existing foldables. It also boasts a rear camera bump that’s immediately recognizable, just like the Pixel 7 series.

When folded, the Pixel Fold measures 139mm tall and 79mm wide versus the Galaxy Z Fold 4’s 155mm and 67mm, respectively. In other words, Google’s foldable is significantly shorter and wider.

Dimensions aside, the Pixel Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 4 also differ in terms of their cover display sizes. The outer display of Google’s foldable measures 5.8 inches diagonal, while the inner one nearly approaches a small tablet with 7.6 inches of usable area. On the other hand, the Z Fold 4’s cover display is larger at 6.2 inches. However, opening the phone reveals an inner display that matches the Pixel Fold’s 7.6 inches.

Google claims a higher peak brightness, but you probably won't notice it in the real world.

The OLED displays on both phones refresh at a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Google claims a higher peak brightness of 1,550 nits for the outer display versus the Fold 4’s 1,000 nits. However, our eyes’ perception of brightness doesn’t scale linearly and Google has only used a 5% window to measure peak brightness. All in all, the Pixel Fold won’t appear 50% brighter in the real world. In fact, you may not even notice a difference between the two displays.

As for processing power, both take rather different approaches once again. Google has opted for its in-house Tensor G2 chip, while Samsung includes Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC. Both chips represent some of the best smartphone silicon on the market today, but there are some differences. Our Tensor G2 benchmarking found that the Snapdragon chip runs cooler and provides additional graphics processing power in a more energy-efficient package. That should translate to battery life gains, as we’ll discuss in a later section.

Both phones include 256GB of storage and 12GB of RAM, but paying a bit extra will net you twice as much storage. The Pixel Fold does not offer a 1TB storage tier, while Samsung’s foldable does. That said, most people don’t usually need that much storage on a smartphone.

It’s worth noting Samsung’s foldable also supports the S Pen. Even though it’s sold separately, you may want one if you care about drawing or taking notes. And that may very well be the deciding factor over the Pixel Fold. The latter simply doesn’t support any active stylus input.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 supports the S Pen, while the Pixel Fold lacks stylus input.

Over on the software side, you can expect first-party apps to properly fit the larger display on the Pixel Fold. Over 50 Google apps have been optimized, and the company says that some will stay exclusive to the Pixel Fold for now. The optimizations will come to the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and other foldables at a later date, though. Samsung technically offers one extra year of Android version updates than Google, but the Pixel Fold will launch with Android 13. The Z Fold 4 used up one of its major updates moving from Android 12 to 13.

Before we move on, let’s talk about durability. The Pixel Fold uses Gorilla Glass Victus on the cover screen, while the Z Fold 4 boasts the slightly more scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass Victus Plus. They also use ultra-thin glass on the inside, as virtually all foldables on the market do these days. Google and Samsung also claim IPX8 water resistance, meaning both phones will survive accidental splashes and even submersion. That’s better than other foldables, many of which don’t have any ingress protection (IP) rating whatsoever.

Google Pixel Fold vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: Size comparison

We’ve already spoken a bit about how the foldables differ in terms of their display sizes, but what do they feel like in the hand? We’ve heard some complaints about the Galaxy Z Fold 4’s slender design over the years, with some finding it hard to type on the narrow cover screen. This won’t be a concern with the Pixel Fold, which is about as wide as a Galaxy S23 Ultra. We’ve praised this short-and-wide design approach in the foldable market before, with the most recent example being the OPPO Find N2.

The Pixel Fold sports a slightly slimmer profile thanks to a more modern hinge design. This should also make it easier to slide in and out of pockets. But it goes without saying that you’ll need to use two hands to maximize your experience when unfolding either smartphone.

We're fans of the Pixel Fold's wider stance for the comfortable typing experience on the cover screen.

Coming to weight, the Pixel Fold might feel a bit less comfortable vs the Galaxy Z Fold 4. At 283g, Google’s foldable doesn’t sound much heavier than the Z Fold 4’s 263g, but for a portable device, every gram counts. We’ve seen foldable smartphones get lighter over the years, and the Z Fold 4 took another step in that direction. Hopefully, Google shaves a few grams off next year to become more competitive in this area.

Given the premium positioning of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Pixel Fold, you’d expect both smartphones to have the best cameras on the market. However, that’s not necessarily the case, as both Samsung and Google can only fit their best hardware into mainstream flagships. Still, that doesn’t mean the cameras on either foldable will let you down.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 features a triple camera array on the rear, which includes a 50MP primary shooter, 10MP 3x telephoto, and 12MP ultrawide sensors. Meanwhile, Google has opted for a similar 48MP primary, 10.8MP ultrawide, and 10.8MP 5x telephoto set of sensors. The Pixel Fold does have a slight advantage with its extra zoom capability, though, so it might be the better pick if you care about homing in on your subjects.

Specs aside, we know that smartphone cameras tend to live by and die by their software. But luckily, both Samsung and Google excel at computational photography, helping the phones deliver excellent results in virtually any condition. We can’t pick a definitive winner until we’ve had more hands-on time with the Pixel Fold, but we haven’t been let down by its lower-end counterparts. Likewise, our Galaxy Z Fold 4 review sang praises of the phone’s cameras. Check out some of the samples we captured below.

Moving to the front-facing cameras, you’ll find comparable cameras on the cover screens of both foldables. The inner screen, meanwhile, houses one of the Galaxy Z Fold 4’s most intriguing features — an under-display 4MP shooter. However, don’t expect it to take glamor shots while you’re out and about, as the quality is only serviceable for video calls at best. The Pixel Fold, meanwhile, includes a visible but higher-quality 8MP inner camera.

If you’re in the market for a foldable, chances are that you expect to get a lot of usage out of your smartphone. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Pixel Fold house almost tablet-sized displays, so it’s important to know if they’ll make it through a workday.

Our testing suggests that you can get around five and a half hours of screen-on time from the Galaxy Z Fold 4’s 4,400mAh battery. Of course, we expect better results if you use the cover screen for the majority of your tasks. Still, our testing shows that Samsung’s foldable can survive most workdays. At most, you may need a small top-up around bedtime.

The Pixel Fold packs a larger battery, but a slightly more power-hungry chip offsets that benefit.

Google seems to have a small advantage over Samsung as the Pixel Fold packs a 4,800mAh battery. Going by the numbers, you’d expect a 10% uplift compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 4. However, the Tensor G2 in the Pixel Fold isn’t built on the more efficient manufacturing processing used by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. So all in all, we expect Google’s foldable to fall somewhere around the Galaxy Z Fold 4, even with the larger battery in tow.

Samsung and Google are some of the most conservative brands in the smartphone industry when it comes to charging speeds. The Pixel Fold supports fast charging at 21W, while the Galaxy Z Fold 4 tops out at 25W instead. One silver lining is that both rely on the universal USB Power Delivery PPS standard. Unfortunately, however, neither Google nor Samsung comes close to matching the 67W and 45W we’ve seen OPPO and Tecno offer on their respective foldables.

For quick top-ups, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Pixel Fold can charge wirelessly at 10W and 7.5W respectively. A full charge will take several hours at these speeds, so it’s best left for short top-ups. Furthermore, only the Samsung foldable includes support for reverse wireless charging.

Google Pixel Fold vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: Price

  • Pixel Fold: Starts at $1,799
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: Launched at $1,799

Unlike its prior smartphones, Google hasn’t opted to undercut its closest competitors with the Pixel Fold. Its $1,799 price matches what Samsung charged for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 at launch. However, you may find Samsung’s foldable available at a lower price given that it launched several months ago.

Samsung’s foldable may also get steeper discounts as we head into the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. In fact, we’ve heard that it may launch slightly earlier than expected. So if you’re not buying the Pixel Fold immediately, you may want to see what Samsung has planned for 2023. The Pixel Fold can already be pre-ordered, with sales officially starting in June.

At the bare minimum, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will feature an upgraded Snapdragon SoC. But we’re also expecting changes to the hinge mechanism, which will allow for a slimmer design and less prominent crease.

Google Pixel Fold vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: Which one should you buy?

The Pixel Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 4 offer cutting-edge smartphone hardware, but they come at a rather hefty cost. Regardless, they’re unlike anything else on the market, especially in Western markets where we’ve been waiting for a competitor to disrupt Samsung’s reign. As for whether Google has a compelling enough foldable to dethrone the Galaxy Z Fold 4, it’s a close fight.

The Pixel Fold’s wider and shorter stance may improve productivity and usability for many users. It’s also slimmer, thanks to a more modern hinge design compared to the one Samsung has used for several generations. Google has also thrown in a few software tricks, like timed-exclusive foldable app optimizations.

Samsung’s foldable, meanwhile, offers a highly refined hardware package thanks to years of improvements. It sports a lighter design and gets away with a smaller battery thanks to a more efficient chipset. You may also find one on sale, making the Galaxy Z Fold 4 a compelling value vs the Pixel Fold. Which one would you spend your money on?

  • Google has launched Android 14 beta 2.
  • The release timeline has so far been similar to the one Google had for Android 13.
  • The stable launch will likely happen in August.

Google revealed its Android 14 schedule in February 2023, with the first developer preview going live the same day as the reveal. The timeline the company has planned out is very similar to the one the tech giant had for Android 13.

On May 10, Google released the Android 14 beta 2, which is now the latest version of the operating system. This latest beta is designed to be tested by the public. If you have a supported Pixel phone, you can install Android 14 beta 2 now.

Judging from the organization’s release date graphic, the next few updates will be iterative updates. If everything goes as planned, Google expects to reach platform stability sometime in June.

Android 14 timeline

Android 14 timeline

Credit: Google

Since the Android 14 release schedule is so similar to Android 13’s, it’s fair to assume Google will follow a similar approach. Last year, Google had two developer previews and eight beta releases for Android 13 before it launched the official update. If Google does something similar this year, there’s a good chance we may see an Android 14 launch sometime in August. However, there’s no guarantee there won’t be delays.

As for which phones will get the new OS, you can expect all versions of the Pixel that haven’t reached their major OS update limit yet, which is every Pixel after and including the Pixel 4a 5G. The same can be said for Samsung’s recent handsets. If you don’t know if your Samsung phone is still eligible, check out our list, which includes every Samsung device getting four major OS updates.

The Android 14 release date for the Pixel will likely precede others, like always. Predicting the OS release date for Samsung is a little trickier to pin down, though. One UI 5 was the fastest OS release Samsung has done, and the company has said that it wants the next update to be even faster.

Here are the significant Android 14 schedule milestones we’ve seen in 2023, so far:

  • February 8, 2023 — Android 14 DP1
  • March 8, 2023 — Android 14 DP2
  • April 12, 2023 — Android 14 beta 1
  • April 26, 2023 — Android 14 beta 1.1
  • May 10, 2023 — Android 14 beta 2
